2013 Anime Character Awards

These are all based solely on my own opinion, and if you care to disagree or name whatever character you felt more suited for the award, feel free to do so.

The Awards

Cutest Male Character:

Sakamichi Onoda from Yowamushi Pedal

I don't usually find male protagonists cute. That's probably because most male protagonists are generic, perverted, etc. Then we have Onoda. He's friendly, very capable, but a bit naive (though not to the point where it's infinitely frustrating). He's got that innocent charm that most protagonists lack, and occasionally gets me to go "aww" while watching.

Runners Up:
Jin Russell from Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo?, Shinnosuke Aikawa from Gin no Saji, Saika Totsuka from Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru.

Cutest Female Character:

Ai from Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi

The anime world is abundant with soulless cute girls that do cute things. However, Ai has character traits aside from her cuteness. She's strong, stubborn, and just all around lovely. She goes through struggles, making and sometimes losing friends. But she keeps on smiling. What a little trooper.

Runners Up: Kaho from Hakkenden: Touhou Hakken Ibun, Pisti from Magi, Tamako Kitashirakawa from Tamako Market, Suzuno Kamazuki from Hataraku Maou-sama!

Sexiest Male Character:

Tsubaki Asahina from Brothers Conflict

Anyone who read my Brothers Conflict posts should have guessed. Tsubaki is uber sexy. An attractive appearance and a sense of humor to boot! Too bad Heroine was too busy trying to play "...siblings" with everybody. Tsubaki was the best ship, and second best guy (Tranny is first ♥).

Runners Up: Makoto Tachibana from Free!, Cicinho from Galilei Donna, Haruto Kurosawa from Coppelion, Ledo from Suisei no Gargantia

Sexiest Female Character:

Yamuraiha from Magi

Yamuraiha's mermaid-like appearance is extremely appealing to the eyes. The shells on the bosoms look never gets old. She is also quite the magician. This makes her even more appealing, seeing as she's good for more than just looking attractive.

Runners Up: Lisa Lisa from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (2012), Akane Ryuuzouji from Walkure Romanze, Sumi Ishihara from Samurai Flamenco

Prettiest Male Character:

Hakuryuu Ren from Magi

I adore Hakuryuu's character design. I've always been fond of the dark hair and light eyes combination, and that mole is just so...d'awww. Though, the best part about his appearance is that Hakuryuu manages to be pretty while still looking like a boy.

Runner Up: Yorunami from Arata Kangatari

Prettiest Female Character:

Taiwan from Hetalia: The Beautiful World

I am well aware that her appearance in the anime was only a few seconds long, but can you blame me? Look at her! She's so elegant! Like an old doll.

Runners Up: Dunya Musta'sim from Magi, Kohaku from Hakkenden: Touhou Hakken Ibun

Most Fabulous Male Character:

Aikurou Mikisugi from Kill la Kill

Don't let his bummy daytime appearance fool you, this guy is indeed the definition of fabulous. Once his hair is removed from the front of his face, he's dazzling. He sparkles and shines like no other man can. Being a nudist somehow adds to his charm (creepy as it may sound).

Runners Up: Hikaru Asahina from Brothers Conflict, Dera Mochimazzi from Tamako Market

Most Fabulous Female Character:

Iva from Karneval (TV)

She attacks with jewels and dresses regally. Need I say more?

Runners Up: Misaki Shokuhou from Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S, Squall Meusel from IS: Infinite Stratos 2

Most Badass Character (Male):

Levi from Shingeki no Kyojin

This one was fairly obvious. This guy is so good at slaying titans it's ridiculous. He makes it look like it's the easiest thing in the world. He has a great deal of both physical and mental strength, not only making him the strongest, but the most interesting character in the series.

Runners Up: Izayoi Sakamaki from Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo?, Kuniharu Ogino from Cuticle Tantei Inaba

Most Badass Character (Female):

Mikasa Ackerman from Shingeki no Kyojin

Another one that was fairly obvious, Mikasa is also quite a force to be reckoned with (especially when matters concern Eren). Though she may not be as ridiculously strong as Levi, she also outshines a great deal of soldiers on the field, wearing a calm, cool expression in the process.

Runners Up: Ryuuko Matoi from Kill la Kill, Kagami Yagami from Sasami-san@Ganbaranai

Best Character Development (Male):

Hikari Sakishima from Nagi no Asukara

I have to admit, at first, I really didn't like Hikari. He was bratty, annoying, and just plain rude at times. However, over time you notice him growing, and confronting his problems rather than complaining about them. He accepts his feelings rather than rejecting them, and accepts when he himself is rejected.

Runners Up: Yugo Hachiken from Gin no Saji, Armin Arlert from Shingeki no Kyojin, Ledo from Suisei no Gargantia

Best Character Development (Female):

Iwai Mushanokouji from Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge

At first she was a rather delicate, almost damsel in distress character type. However, she does end up becoming one of the strongest (mentally, anyway) characters in the series. Instead of quivering in a nearly hopeless situation, she is determined. She saves herself and those around her on more than one occasion, even though, early on, she was the one that needed to be saved.

Runner Up: Sumire Hanano from Chihayafuru 2

Best Male Protagonist:

Hikari Sakishima from Nagi no Asukara

I love watching characters develop and grow in a series, but it's especially great when the main character does. Hikari manages to make you like him more with each episode. He matures, but still manages to keep some childish aspects of him in tact. My only issue with him is his terrible taste in women.

Runners Up: Yugo Hachiken from Gin no Saji, Shinichi Kanou from Outbreak Company, Ledo from Suisei no Gargantia, Eita Kidou from Ore no Kanojo to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru

Best Female Protagonist:

Ryuuko Matoi from Kill la Kill

I like strong protagonists, characters that face their problems up front, and get stronger in the process. Ryuuko has an almost ridiculous amount of determination, she accepts any challenge no matter how difficult it may be. At some points, her determination may be her downfall, but she always manages to get back up.

Runners Up: Ai from Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi, Hikage Miyakawa from Miyakawa-ke no Kuufuku

Best Male Character:

Hakuryuu Ren from Magi

Hakuryuu is one of my all time favorite characters. Why? Well, I often abhor weak characters because they almost never are actually aware that they are weak. Well, Hakuryuu is well aware, and he hates it. He breaks down and cries over it, and it's hilarious. But he strives to change, however, making some bad choices in the process. Lots of love for this guy, though. Lots of love.

Runners Up: Hikari Sakishima from Nagi no Asukara, Levi from Shingeki no Kyojin, Kaname Isaki from Nagi no Asukara, L-elf Karlstein from Kakumeiki Valvrave, Hikaru Asahina from Brothers Conflict

Best Female Character:

Mako Mankanshoku from Kill la Kill

When a side character manages to still the show in nearly every episode, how can they not be awesome? Mako is an entire cheer squad in one person, except funny instead of obnoxious. It also seems as if the characters around her respect her, but how can you not? Nothing phases this girl. Nothing.

Runners Up: Mikasa Ackerman from Shingeki no Kyojin, Iwai Mushanokouji from Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge, Chisaki Hiradaira from Nagi no Asukara

Scariest Male Character:

Kanato Sakamaki from Diabolik Lovers

In addition to his creepy appearance and frequent, dramatic mood swings, he turns women into dolls, and keeps them as decorations. That's the shit nightmares are made of.

Runner Up: Toma from Amnesia

Scariest Female Character:

Kirakishou from Rozen Maiden: Zur├╝ckspulen

Though something may be beautiful, it may not be pure or harmless in any sense. Kirakishou is indeed a monster. A monster you cannot run nor hide from, a monster that can show up any time, anywhere through the use of a mirror. She also holds a great deal of power, and may or may not be a sociopath.

Runners Up: Fiend from Shinsekai yori, Shion Ozu from Coppelion

Biggest Creeper (Male):

Kyouhei Kannazuki from Date A Live

Any adult male that has a thing for young girls is a creeper, but this guy is just so upfront and loud about it that it's almost scary. I'm not sure, but his creepiness may only apply to Kotori. Regardless, he's still a creeper.

Runner Up: Kaname Asahina from Brothers Conflict

Biggest Creeper (Female):

Cthune from Haiyore! Nyaruko-san W

Nyaruko-san is a show filled with creepers. Her being the addition in the second season, it's only natural she would win in this category. Also, having an obsession (a sexy one, especially) for your cousin, is pretty off-putting.

Runner Up: Suzuna Hiiragi from Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyou

Biggest Troll (Male):

Berg-Katze from Gatchaman Crowds

This guy aspires to cause pure chaos for the hell of it. Not just for one small group of people, or even one city, but the world! He nearly destroyed society with something built to help it, causing trouble for others for absolutely no reason.

Runner Up: Hikaru Asahina from Brothers Conflict

Biggest Troll (Female):

Sayori Mizushima from Love Lab

Sayori's obsession with money was a pretty funny characteristic, but the best thing about her is the way she would tease Riko. Riko dug herself a pretty deep hole (what with being a huge liar and all), but Sayori put her in numerous positions that made her dig deeper, and deeper. Ultimately, this made her the most evil, but the most interesting character in the series.

Runner Up: Rin Eba from Kimi no Iru Machi

Male Character that Should've Gotten More Screen Time:

Arata from Arata Kangatari

Why is it that the awesome Arata is the one we hardly see? The protagonist is so whiny and annoying, and this guy is just the complete opposite of him! He faces his problems without fear (unlike the protagonist), he has an enthusiastic and entertaining personality (unlike the protagonist), and is just an all around great character (unlike the protagonist).

Female Character that Should've Gotten More Screen Time:

Hamaji from Hakkenden: Touhou Hakken Ibun

My sweet estrogen dosage, why? Why did they ship you off to boarding school? Why? Whyyy??? I guess it's because the fangirls were probably like "OMG she's so annoying" and shit, but why? She was just there! She hardly ever did anything worth mentioning, she was just hanging out! I hate it when shows have a mostly male cast and vice versa (most of the time, anyway, there are exceptions), and these guys have the nerve to get rid of the one female main character just because she wasn't a bishie? Fuck this show.

Runners Up: Yui Goidou from Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai: Megami-hen, Misaki Shokuhou from Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S

Most Annoying Male Character:

Juli from Brothers Conflict

I hate it that whenever there was a mood going, about 75% of the time, this thing has to come along and ruin it. He's always talking shit about everybody (apart from Louis, anyway), even though he has the exact same feelings they do for the heroine (but the fact that he's a squirrel, makes him a lot worse). Every time some misfortune befell him, I was happy.

Runners Up: Mitsuki Kamatani from Meganebu!, Nai from Karneval, Aiichiro Nitori from Free!, Shino Inuzuka from Hakkenden: Touhou Hakken Ibun, Jouji Tanaka from Servant x Service , Arata Hinohara from Arata Kangatari

Most Annoying Female Character:

Peashy from Choujigen Game Neptune: The Animation

Good lord, she's everything I hate about a character and more. She's loud, she whines and cries a lot, she causes a great deal of trouble and is completely useless to the protagonists. That's not all though. She somehow manages to be very much useful to the antagonists of the show. Ain't that something?

Runners Up: Yaya from Machine-Doll wa Kizutsukanai, Tamaki Irie from Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince, Hinata Miyakawa from Miyakawa-ke no Kuufuku, Tohko Ichimiya from Servant x Service, Oharu from Mushibugyou, Mao Amatsuka from GJ-bu, Aoi Fukasaku from Coppelion

Dumbest Male Character:

Pinion from Suisei no Gargantia

The cast of Gargantia does not consist of the wisest characters I've ever seen. In fact most of them are at least a little dim. Then there's Pinion, the bottom of the barrel. This guy has no sense of logic whatsoever. He wants to do something (usually for the sake of treasure, nothing more), he does it, without even considering the dangers or consequences (and he usually gets caught up with something in the process).

Dumbest Female Character:
Yui Komori from Diabolik Lovers

When you live in a house filled with abusive, rapey vampires, and are given the opportunity to leave (possibly on more than one occasion) would you take it? Most would answer yes, but Yui said no. Not only that, she would approach said rapey vampires in attempts to befriend them, despite them treating her like a food supply or an object for fornication.

Runners Up: Iori Kitagawa from Kakumeiki Valvrave, Heroine from Amnesia, Tsukushi Tsutsukakushi from Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko., Hinata Miyakawa from Miyakawa-ke no Kuufuku

Worst Male Protagonist:

Arata Hinohara from Arata Kangatari

I already expressed it earlier, but damn, this guy is so whiny and down on himself that it drives me crazy. Every time a problem arose in the show he would be all pessimistic about it until someone pep talked him or was in some sort of danger (or dead, in some cases).

Worst Female Protagonist:

Yui Komori from Diabolik Lovers

Her being a complete and total moron just did it for me here. I've seen horrible characters before, but one being the protagonist is a fairly uncommon encounter. However, uncommon or not, it just made the series all the more ridiculous.

Runners Up: Heroine from Amnesia, Neptune from Choujigen Game Neptune: The Animation, Yura Yamato from Stella Jogakuin Koutou-ka C³-bu, Uzume Uno from Fantasista Doll

Most Hated Male Character:

Makoto Hanamiya from Kuroko no Basket 2nd Season

I hate it when people cheat in a game, and even competitive sports. Instead of actually playing fairly like a normal person, you have to resort to underhanded methods to win? Give me a break! If you can't win without cheating, then maybe you shouldn't be playing the game.

Runner Up: Masato Kadowaki from Arata Kangatari

Most Hated Female Character:

Yuzuki Eba from Kimi no Iru Machi

This might come as a shocker for some. Why would anyone dislike her? She's so pretty and positive and blah blah blah. Well, overly positive types are really annoying. That's not the only reason, though. She has the audacity to go to her ex-boyfriend who is already in a relationship (with a WAY better girl by the way), and tells him she still loves him (after telling him that they shouldn't see each other anymore), basically getting him to dump his awesome girlfriend for her generic ass. Mind you, it's just as much his decision, but the way she acts so innocent and almost victim-like about it (the woe is me type, bleh) really pisses me off.

Runners Up: Peashy from Choujigen Game Neptune: The Animation, Mana from Miss Monochrome, Kanon Ozu from Coppelion, Haruka Niimi from Photokano, Yura Yamato from Stella Jogakuin Koutou-ka C³-bu

And that concludes my 2013 Anime Character Awards! Thank you very much for reading, and I hope you stay tuned for the next post!
