2013 Anime Awards

It's been awhile, folks! I was kind of stressed out and busy throughout these past few months so I pretty much dropped just about every anime I was watching back during the winter season. BUT I am back now as you can see, and will go back to being a regular anime viewer, but a bit more in moderation (college awaits, after all). I didn't exactly finish each anime I had been watching at that time (Kill la Kill, Golden Time, etc.), so my opinions on the listed shows are based off of what I have seen of them.

2013 was a pretty good year for anime, there were many great shows, but there were also quite a few bad ones in the mix. As always, I provided my list of the top 20 best anime of 2013, as well as a top 16 worst list (16 because I couldn't quite get 20..). I also provided a list of awards in a number of categories.

Please note that the lists and the awards are based only off of my opinion. Feel free to comment on your favorites (and least favorites) of 2013.

The Awards:

Best Story

Nagi no Asukara

This show had a very much unique story. It takes your typical young romance, and adds a twist to it. There are two kinds of people: those that live on land and those that live underwater. The tension between the two peoples is clear, but they manage to coexist in everyday life. The way the presented this concept was spectacular.

Runners Up: Magi: The Kingdom of Magic, Shingeki no Kyojin, Kill la Kill, Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi

Best Animation

The style is almost story-bookish. It's got bright colors, and almost a mystifying appearance about it. It's certainly unique amongst the other animation styles I've seen throughout the year.

Runners Up: Nagi no Asukara, Meganebu!, Shingeki no Kyojin, Kyoukai no Kanata, Chihayafuru 2,  Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi, Tamako Market

Best Voice Cast

Magi: The Kingdom of Magic

Just like the first season, the second season cast for Magi is full of well-known voice actors and actresses. This season included even more voice actors I'm extremely fond of (Yuuichi Nakamura and Akira Ishida). As well as some other very well known voice actors such as Mamoru Miyano, Ayahi Takagaki, Kana Asumi, Kikuko Inoue, and Ryota Ohsaka.

Runners Up: Chihayafuru 2, Senran Kagura

Best Characters

Magi: The Kingdom of Magic

I love the cast of characters in Magi. I think I made that obvious last year, but it must be said. Gyokuen and Hakuryuu in particular triggered...many emotions (in Gyokuen's case, mostly anger. I adore Hakuryuu though). And of course, we got the mains, they're also wonderful (especially Morgiana~). Magi always had a great cast of characters, but we get to see even more of them in this season.

Runners Up: Nagi no Asukara, Chihayafuru 2, Shingeki no Kyojin, Hataraku Maou-sama!, Gin no Saji, Kill la Kill, Golden TimeYowamushi Pedal

Best Shounen

Magi: The Kingdom of Magic

Three awards in a row! Okay, so at this point, all of you should now that Magi is my favorite shounen anime. Therefore, by default, it wins this category. There is still reason though. This show both presents elements found in well-done shounen series (great action, great mains, villains that piss one off, a variety of arcs in a variety of settings) as well as some not common (politics) that add up to a great shounen series.

Runners Up: Hataraku Maou-sama!, Kuroko no Basket 2, Gin no Saji, Tokyo Ravens, Mushibugyou, Ace of Diamond, Arata Kangatari

Best Shoujo

Brothers Conflict

There really weren't any other decent shoujo series this year (Amnesia was mediocre, and Diabolik Lovers was...well...), so this series won by default. Still, this series has got to be the most incredible gathering of shoujo archetypes I've ever seen. There were also some standouts amongst the many archetypes (like Tranny and Tsubaki). Of course, the story was very typical and predictable, but it was still very fun to watch.

Best Josei

Chihayafuru 2

This show was the only one in it's category, so this also won by default. However, this was probably one of the best shows of the year (it's also a really good sequel). We got a wonderful cast of characters, beautiful animation, and a very much engaging story. This season was mostly Karuta matches, but it still managed to keep me interested throughout. That is certainly a great accomplishment.

Best Seinen

Golden Time

Oh hey, a show that's not about high schoolers or middle schoolers! There's more to this show than that though. The college setting is certainly appealing, and the characters are very quirky and interesting.

Runners Up: Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge, Coppelion

Best Music Anime

AKB0048 Next Stage

To be honest, out of all the music series that came out this year (though that's not saying much because there were only 3) I'd say this one was the only one where I really liked the songs. That's definitely important when it comes to a series like this.

Runners Up: Love Live! School Idol Project, Miss Monochrome

Best Slice of Life Anime

Gin no Saji

This show was one of the best slice of life series I've seen in a long time. I love how real the characters were, and the frame of mind of the main character is both complicated and relatable. The setting was great, a boarding school in the boonies has never seemed so appealing and fun before. Really, this series was just great as a whole.

Runners Up: Servant x Service, Genshiken Nidaime, Non Non Biyori

Best Comedy Anime

Hataraku Maou-sama!

This show was an excellent comedy. It wasn't so much the jokes as it was the execution of them. Playing really dramatic music whilst some insignificant conflict makes for an excellent scene in a comedy. That and the character interactions, those were also really funny.

Runners Up: Kill la Kill, Tamako Market, Love Lab, Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko., Haiyore! Nyaruko-san W

Best Romance Anime

Nagi no Asukara

Though Golden Time is also a great romance series, in the end, nothing compares to Nagi no Asukara. This series has several sweet romances, all of which are beautiful in their own way. You got star-crossed lovers, two pairs of childhood friends, and a young girl in (one-sided?) love with a boy from another world. It's absolutely beautiful, so much so that mere words cannot describe it.

Runners Up: Golden Time, Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko., Ore no Kanojo to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru

Best Harem Anime

Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai: Megami-hen

I like harem series where there is more to it than some loser guys attracting a horde of gorgeous females for no reason whatsoever. In this series he has to make girls fall in love with him (again) to save the world! Now that's a pretty legit reason if I do say so myself! Also, the girls are individually likable, though they are archetypes.

Runners Up: Monogatari Series Second Season, High School DxD New, Date A Live

Best Fantasy Anime

Magi: The Kingdom of Magic

With the addition of the magic academy, the Laem Colosseum in this season, and the introduction of the remaining magis, it's no wonder I picked this show as the best fantasy of the year. This series just has a nice, unique environment, and I can never get passed it.

Runners Up: Nagi no Asukara, Shingeki no Kyojin, Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi, Uchouten Kazoku, Kyousougiga (TV), Kyokai no Kanata, Arata Kangatari, Red Data Girl, Karneval, Strike the Blood

Best Mecha Anime

Kakumeiki Valvrave

Valvrave is every mecha series ever wrapped up into one show. Though this series is full of clich├ęs, it's also got some unique aspects to it (at least when combined with mechas). Aspects such as vampires, and an independent nation consisting of students.

Runner Up: Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince

Best Action Anime

Kill la Kill

No other 2013 anime can compare in action to Kill la Kill. This show certainly knows how to make some of the most hilarious, epic, chaotic action scenes I've ever seen. It's really hard to describe with mere words, you must watch at least one episode to get the idea.

Runners Up: Magi: The Kingdom of Magic, Shingeki no Kyojin, Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S

Best Sci-Fi Anime

Gatchaman Crowds

I've never seen the original Gatchaman series, but Crowds was definitely a great show. It's full of colors and aliens and more colors. Everyday people are secretly superheroes defending the Earth from alien beings. One of them is also a panda-like alien. This show is awesome.

Runners Up: Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S, AKB0048 Next Stage, Suisei no Gargantia, Kakumeiki Valvrave, Coppelion, Karneval, Date A Live

Best Mystery Anime

This is the only mystery anime I watched the whole year, so it wins by default. However, that's not to say it wasn't a decent mystery series. The way the scenarios were set up was a bit over the top and ridiculous, but that's what added to the charm. I kind of lost interest after they killed off my favorite characters, though.

Best Sports Anime

Kuroko no Basket 2nd Season

I hardly ever get into real life sports, but this anime gets me hooked. I mean, the characters are great (which adds to the awesome) but the way they reel you into the games....damn, it makes me forget I have no interest in sports.

Runners Up: Chihayafuru 2, Yowamushi Pedal, Diamond no Ace, Free!, Sekai de Ichiban Tsuyoku Naritai!

Cutest Anime

Tamako Market

I'm not into the cute girls doing cute things genre, but there are exceptions. Case in point, Tamako Market. It manages to be more than just cute girls doing cute things with the addition of a funny bird, a ridiculous family rivalry, and a foreign prince. This show managed to be adorable and loads of fun to watch.

Runner Up: Gingitsune

Biggest Surprise

Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge

I had some spectacularly low expectations for this series, but boy did it dazzle (yes, dazzle) me in the end. I had no idea that this show would be as nightmarish and crazy as it was. This show delivered, as perhaps the most cringe worthy and disturbing (yet, somehow addicting) show of the year.

Runners Up: Love Lab, Ore no Nounai Sentakushi ga, Gakuen Love Comedy wo Zenryoku de Jama Shiteiru, Kotoura-san

Best Plot Development

Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince

I hated this show when it started, but, being the masochist that I was I kept watching it. That was honestly a really good choice, because over time, the series takes a turn for the more interesting with an intergalactic war between humans and a similar species. The characters still kind of sucked though.

Best Sequel

Magi: The Kingdom of Magic

Yes, Magi wins again. But, it's only because the sequel was a major improvement to the first series. They stayed truer to the source material this time around and included the Pirates arc (tee hee).

Runners Up: Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S, Chihayafuru 2, Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai Next

Best Ending

Gatchaman Crowds

I'll keep this short and simple, they not only managed to resolve the conflict within the series, they also did it including everyone around them and humorously/stylishly at that.

Runners Up: Kakumeiki Valvrave, Suisei no Gargantia

Weirdest Anime

So the main character is some sort of introvert deity and the Yagami sisters are a robot, an abnormally large child, and an extremely short teacher. In one episode, the world turned to chocolate. This show was pretty wacky.

Runners Up: Gatchaman Crowds, Kyousougiga (TV)

Most Disturbing Anime

Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge

I have never cringed so much while watching an anime. This show really knew how to send chills down my spine. Hell, sometimes the presence alone of certain characters was enough to perturb me (particularly Ruka and Romio).

Runners Up: Diabolik Lovers, Aku no Hana

Saddest Anime

Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi

The undead are normally used in a more tacky horror fashion instead of a solemn one. This girl's mission was to put the dead to rest, sometimes including family and friends. It really pulled on my heartstrings and made me ponder whether I'd be able to do the same thing in her position.

Runner Up: Little Busters!: Refrain

Worst Story

Choujigen Game Neptune The Animation

Cute girls are games. That's pretty much it. It probably would have been more tolerable if there was anything remotely interesting about any of the characters, but they pretty much are just different incarnations of the moe blob.

Worst Plot Development

Bakumatsu Gijinden Roman

It started off real well, but then they started including some weird robot and superhero stuff. This was supposed to take place long before such technology could exist, right? Why are there robots? It was all well and good until they added robots. What the hell.

Most Boring

Kitakubu Katsudou Kiroku

When you make a comedy about cute girls, you should probably make it funny. I often spaced out watching this show, nothing they ever talked about was interesting or humorous. Like most cute girls series, this really did not need an anime.

Runners Up: Gifuu Doudou!!: Kanetsugu to Keiji, Zettai Bouei Leviathan, Choujigen Game Neptune The Animation, GJ-bu

Worst Characters
Kitakubu Katsudou Kiroku

None of them are interesting, they're just the same stereotypes we all know, except exaggerated or dulled to the point of no return.

Runners Up: Diabolik Lovers, Choujigen Game Neptune The Animation, IS: Infinite Stratos 2

Cheesiest Anime

Uta no☆Prince-sama♪ Maji Love 2000%

Shoujo series are oftentimes very cheesy, but this series is the pinnacle of cheese. These characters are so in love with this cat-eyed girl's songs (and the girl too, arguably) and every mediocre performance they do is them conveying their feelings for her to the world or whatever. It's laughable, really.

Runner Up: IS: Infinite Stratos 2

Most Disappointing

BlazBlue: Alter Memory

I was super excited when I heard that this series was coming out. I thought I would be presented with awesome characters and some over the top action scenes. Instead, what I got was some poorly animated, poorly paced, bloody mess of an anime.

Runners Up: Kimi no Iru Machi, Aku no Hana

Worst Animation

Ai Mai Mi

If the exact same animation style and quality were used about 30 years ago, it may have been mildly acceptable. However, this quality of animation was an abomination for today's standards. Not only were the characters ugly but the backgrounds were too. It looked like something a grade-schooler had drawn.

Runners Up: BlazBlue: Alter Memory, Kimi no Iru Machi, Aku no Hana, Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince

Worst Ending

Servant x Service

I really liked this show, especially because of the HasebexLucy ship, but this ending was perhaps the most rage-inducing ending I've seen in years. What happens? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Small conflict is resolved by no one giving a crap, and the characters' relationships do not improve (or worsen) at all.

Runners Up: Ore no Nounai Sentakushi ga, Gakuen Love Comedy wo Zenryoku de Jama Shiteiru

2013 was a pretty awesome year for anime. All years have their share of bad series, but this year contained a great variety of some pretty good shows. I'll be back soon with my 2013 anime character awards post. So please do stay tuned!
