Final Thoughts on Fall 2013 Anime

The fall 2013 anime season has come to an end, and with it, plenty of good anime. The fall season is pretty much always my favorite anime season of the year, and this year was no exception. We were treated to many great shows, and of course, some bad ones to go with them. As always, I'm here to give you my final thoughts on the individual anime that have ended, as well as my thoughts on the ongoing ones.

Ongoing Anime:

Diamond no Ace

I never really liked baseball, in fact, I kind of hate watching baseball. Yet, somehow, this show gets me to not only enjoy the sport, but get immersed in it. Mostly because (like with many of the other shows I'll mention later) of the characters. Once you get familiar with them, you notice the strong bonds within the team, as well as the respect amongst the players. I like that in a sports series, it really gets you into it.

Golden Time

I love it when slice of life anime aren't set in high school or middle school. It's quite refreshing, really. Anyway, I adore this series, but as usual, I'm not fond of the main female. Koko is a bit...obnoxious..or crazy..or both. Linda is so much better in my opinion, but we all know that things are probably not gonna work out in her favor. Oh well.

Kill la Kill

This show is insanely awesome! I love ridiculously over the top shows like this one. It keeps you on the edge of your seat and makes you laugh at the same time. Also, the characters pretty much make the show for me. Their interactions (particularly those involving Mako or her family) are the most entertaining parts of the episodes. Of course, the action is also amazing. This series is definitely one of my favorites from this year.

Kuroko no Basket 2nd Season

Wow, I don't think I've ever raged so much at this show as I did during the game against Kirisaki Daiichi. I actually got seriously angry when watching that part of the show, but I guess this show was definitely doing something right if it invoked that much emotion from me. I still love this series, and I can't wait to see where it'll go next.

Log Horizon

Though this was originally described as Maoyuu Maou Yuusha meets Sword Art Online, I have to say, I probably like this series better than both of those. Probably because the characters in this series are more realistic and the problems are not very easily solved. The setting is also very appealing, I kind of want to play the game (so long as I'm not stuck in it, of course).

Magi: The Kingdom of Magic

I have to say, this is definitely an improvement from the first season of the anime. This season follows the manga more, and actually adds more material to the story. I'm liking it quite a bit, and I'm looking forward to seeing Titus in action (Titus is one of my favorite characters in the manga). My only complaint is the use of male voice actors for Kouha and Titus (particularly Kouha, every time I hear his voice I think of Shino from Hakkenden)...but whatever.

Nagi no Asukara

This show is perhaps the most beautiful anime I've seen all year. The characters (aside from the main heroine) are very real, the setting is unique, the story is engaging, the animation is gorgeous, everything about this show is beautiful. I'm so happy to see this continuing into the next anime season because there is a whole lot more I'd like to see happen.

Samurai Flamenco

This show certainly likes to change things...really fast. It's crazy how this show just suddenly takes on a completely different direction, but it's also very entertaining. I never really know where this series is heading, and that's pretty rare nowadays. This might not be everyone's thing, but I certainly find it appealing.

Strike the Blood

This show is very cliché, but it's entertaining just by being as cliché as it is. The protagonist is attracting women left and right, there are nosebleeds, there's ecchi, and there's that one tsundere girl that we all know will end up with the protagonist. It's predictable, but it's still pretty good.

Tokyo Ravens

This show is also pretty typical, but it's really enjoyable. I mean, we got a crossdresser exorcist, a loli familiar, and a sexy half-ogre (he is very sexy), who wouldn't love such a cast?! Also, the animation style is pretty interesting, I don't think I've ever seen anything like it before.

Uchuu Kyoudai

It seems that Hibito is finally back on track with his astronaut career. Lately I've been more immersed in Hibito's side of the story than in Mutta's. Of course, I'm not saying Mutta is uninteresting, because Mutta has always been the star of this show.

Yowamushi Pedal

I'm not a big fan of bicycling, but this show makes it really entertaining. It's probably because of the characters, because they're very likable and fun to watch. They're competitive, but they're not total jerks about it (they try to be though, and that's kind of funny to watch). Also, the protagonist is so...cute? I guess that's a good way to describe him. I like him, he's probably my favorite character in the show...or Naruko, he's quite spirited.

Completed Anime:

BlazBlue: Alter Memory

I really wish I understood at least a little of what happened in this show. I guess it was made for the people who played the video game, because it never really explained anything that was going on. Things just happened, people fought, girls were also computers for some reason, and some guy was a criminal for some reason. That's all I really got out of it.

Coppelion

This series is bashed way too much. Personally, I believe it was a pretty good series, despite its flaws. The main characters may not be the smartest or most composed, but they're all likable in their own way. But of course, one of the main reasons (aside from the concept and Haruto) was the animation. GoHands makes things really nice and colorful.

Diabolik Lovers

Rape, blood-sucking, and possession. This show was some sick sh*t, I question the sanity of the person who wrote this (I question the sanity of the person who wrote the visual novel even more because apparently that was even worse). I also question my sanity for blogging it...oh well. I wouldn't recommend this for the sound of mind and morals.

Galilei Donna

When I first started watching this show, I was practically in love with it. It looked quirky, flamboyant, and fun. Unfortunately, that is not what I got when I watched the rest of the series. What I got was an emotional family drama, and a lot of mixed up facts. The show is still decent, but it certainly disappointed me.

Gifuu Doudou!!: Kanetsugu to Keiji

I'm surprised I even managed to finish this show. I've said it quite a few times, but I'm usually not really fond of historical anime (at least, when it's Japanese history), because I lack the understanding of their ideas of "honor" and "righteousness." Unfortunately, this show was all about that stuff, and quiet frankly when I wasn't spaced out I was questioning their train of thought. Also, they executed it in a very dull manner, I never thought wars could be so boring.

Gingitsune

This was, by far, the most adorable show of the season. This was one of those shows that manages to be sweet and peaceful without being boring. The characters were all very sweet and lovable, and the story was quite touching. This was very refreshing to watch, I always felt very nice and at peace when I finished watching an episode. I'm gonna miss this show, you don't find many like it very often.

IS: Infinite Stratos 2

I liked the first season, but this season was just plain awful. It was a lot of completely pointless fanservice, and very little action. Not to mention the new characters are just plain boring. I've seen these archetypes before, all of them. Also, were the girls that were already in the harem this annoying in the first season? Because they annoyed the crap out of me.

Kakumeiki Valvrave 2nd Season

Valvrave was a cheesy, yet good mecha series. It kept you on the edge of your seat at times, it made you laugh or rage at the complete idiocy of some of the characters, and it was thoroughly enjoyable. The ending was a bit bittersweet, but I think it was probably one of the best endings I've seen all year.

Kyoukai no Kanata

This show was beautifully animated, and it had lovable characters. Demon hunting and a girl with blood manipulation powers (kind of reminded me of Deadman Wonderland) were certainly an interesting combination.I have to say, Kyoto Animation sure has a knack for making battle scenes. They were very creatively executed, and they were certainly a thrill to watch.

Kyousogiga (TV)

I was certainly not expecting this show to be as emotional as it was. My gosh, I was just expecting it to be an acid trip, not a family drama AND and acid trip. Crazy stuff, but it was right up my alley. Also, I absolutely adore the animation style, particularly the bright colors they use. It was very pleasing to the eyes.

Little Busters!: Refrain

Murphy's Law has never been more prominent in a series I've seen before. Sheesh, I think that wasn't the case one time and that's it. Everything was depressing, there was no hope, everything is horrible, but then, by some miracle, that is no longer the case. This was a decent watch, but I don't like these kinds of formulas for shows.

Machine-Doll wa Kizutsukanai

This show would have been good if all the characters weren't so damn annoying. Especially Yaya, she gave me numerous headaches. Aside from the horrid cast of characters, this show had a fairly decent concept, but a somewhat dull execution. I often spaced out while watching this, and when I wasn't spaced out I had no idea and/or no interest in what was going on.

Meganebu!

Just as I expected, this show was the male alternative of the "cute girls doing cute things" genre. There really wasn't much substance to the plot most of the time (an exception would be the ghost episode) and most of the characters were bland or annoying. One good thing about this show was the animation. It was really beautifully done (particularly the reflections in the water and the color scheme).

Miss Monochrome

Despite being a short series, this was quite enjoyable. I mean, poor ol' Monochrome never really did meet her goal, but at least she started on a path to...One thing that irritates me is Mana. She be takin' all of Monochrome's money and later bumps into her and acts like nothing even happened!

Monogatari Series: Second Season

After that last arc, I kind of wish Kaiki was the protagonist and not Araragi. I guess it's too much to ask for at this point though. The next thing in the Monogatari series that's lined up is Hanamonogatari, which is said to focus on Kanbaru. I'm looking forward to that, because I didn't see much of her in this installment. Other than the lack of Kanbaru, I'd say this was a pretty good addition to the series. The visuals were impressive as always, and the story (particularly in the last two arcs) was engaging.

Non Non Biyori

This show was nice and peaceful. Unfortunately it was one of those shows that was so peaceful that it almost put me to sleep a few times. I'm not saying it's bad though, because it's not. It actually had quite a few nice moments in it, and some funny ones too.

Ore no Nounai Sentakushi ga, Gakuen Love Comedy wo Zenryoku de Jama Shiteiru

This series was certainly a pleasant surprise. I definitely wasn't expecting it to be a legitimately funny comedy series. This series pretty much parodied most romantic/ecchi/comedies that you see nowadays. It was certainly a treat to see what they would poke fun at every week. Though, the last episode was a bit on the weak side.

Outbreak Company

Anime references, they're everywhere! Seriously, even though most of them were altered in some way, they were so easy to spot. This show certainly had a lot of great moments too, particularly the swimsuit episode and the soccer episode. It's a bit of a shame that it ended so soon.

Sekai de Ichiban Tsuyoku Naritai!

I haven't seen any wrestling shows other than this, so I have nothing to compare it to. It was a bit on the stupid side, I had to watch it when no one else was around because it sounded so much like porn, and the animation was inconsistent at times. Still, I cannot deny that I enjoyed it. There's something about cute girls causing each other pain that I find very entertaining...I'm not sure what though. I hated the idols though, damn they were annoying.

Super Seisyun Brothers

As I expected, this series was quite charming. It's a shame, though, that it only lasted one season. I was hoping for some *ahem* romantic developments to take place between Mao and Chiko but...well, you can't expect subplots in a short series.

Walkure Romanze

Hard and thick jousting drama. I'd like to start off by giving this show props for having such a great sense of humor, though it was rarely displayed. Sex jokes aside, this show was surprisingly a great sports series. The jousting battles were composed by some of the most attractive looking CG I've ever seen. Also, the characters worked well together, and some of the episodes were just...instant classics (episodes 2 and 7).

Yuusha ni Narenakatta Ore wa Shibushibu Shuushoku wo Ketsui Shimashita.

Though I bashed Infinite Stratos for having too much pointless fanservice, this show's brightest point was the pointless fanservice. Ridiculous would be an even better word, because boobs would bounce all over the damn place from even the slightest movement. There really weren't any decent things about this show other than the fanservice, but it certainly wasn't bad.

Well, those are my final thoughts on this season. It certainly had it's high points, and some low points as well, but it was definitely a great season. Now, we're heading into a whole new year, filled with lots of potential. Let's hope for a great 2014! See you guys next time!

  1. Can you recommend me a new anime from this list? I've already watched Kill la Kill, Kuroko no Basket and Magi but I want to watch a new series, particularly anime that can make me laugh. From your blog, Log Horizon and Nagi no Asukara look promising. But this time, I want to avoid sad story. Thank you in advance ^^
