2012 has ended, and with it, a lot of great anime. I have to admit that this year was a pretty damn good year for anime, but at the same time, there were, of course, some not so good ones in the mix. Now, these "Anime Awards" are based solely on my opinion , if you happen to disagree with my choices, that's fine, but everything I picked was what I liked and thought deserving enough to get an "award." Now, in this post I will provide my top best and worst anime, as well as several awards such as best story, and vice versa. If I missed anything you liked (except SAO) on the list, let me know.

The Awards:

Best Story
Magi

The story for Magi is one that has not been seen in anime, but at the same time, it has. The unique elements of an Arabian Knights setting, djins (or genies if you prefer) that posses great, pretty much godly, power, and a Magi who must choose a king. Then you have elements that have been used before, such as corrupted governments, rebellions, the underdog, etc. However, the combination of all these elements creates a very much enjoyable and unique story.

Runners Up: Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, Sakamichi no Apollon

Best Animation
Hyouka

It's pretty much expected of Kyoto Animation to produce extraordinary animation for every series they do, but Hyouka, however, was so visually appealing that it would keep you awake even if you watched 15 minutes of straight dialogue with little to no movement of the characters. Now that, my friends, is amazing quality.

Runners Up: K, Sakamichi no Apollon, Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!, Natsuyuki Rendezvous

Best Voice Cast
Hyouka

What's amazing about Hyouka is how they got so many big names in voice acting to play such minor roles. Every single character, main, supporting, and even background, has an experienced voice actor playing the role.

Fun Fact: The voice actors for Houtarou and Satoshi also played Tomoya and Youhei in Clannad

Runners Up: K, Magi

Best Characters
Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!

All of the characters of Chuunibyou are likable in their own way. I especially loved Rikka, and her sister was also very interesting. There weren't any other anime in 2012 that had an entire cast of characters I really liked. I even ended up liking the one character in this show that I hated, and that has never happened before for me.

Runners Up: Magi, Sakamichi no Apollon, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, Little Busters!, Sankarea

Best Shounen

Magi

Magi contains all of the elements of a great shounen, great action, great characters, and great humor. Plus, it is also an adventure series, and that also is something that makes for a great shounen series.

Runners Up: Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou, Kuroko no Basket, Accel World

Best Shoujo
Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun

The reason why I like this series so much is that it does this a bit differently than most shoujo series. For one, Shizuku is very much indifferent and obsessed with studying, whereas Haru is very friendly but also pretty violent. The two of them make for an interesting combination, instead of the usual normal girl/girl obsessed with finding love x the most popular boy in school.

Runner Up: Sukitte Ii na yo.

Best Josei
Sakamichi no Apollon

This show had an amazing appeal, as do many josei anime. This one however stands out because of its lovable characters, great music, great romance, and fantastic story. So, without a single doubt in my mind, I consider this as the best josei anime of the year, as well as one of the best anime in general.

Runner Up: Natsuyuki Rendezvous

Best Seinen
Jormungand

No matter how you look at it, this is a perfect series for an older audience. A show about an arms dealer, a child who hates weapons working for said arms dealer, and the other members of her team of guards. It shows you how risky being an arms dealer is, and how you never know who your allies and who your enemies are.

Runners Up: Btooom!

Best Music Anime
Sakamichi no Apollon

This show has some of the best music I've heard all year. It has a fantastic opening, but what really makes this show is the jam sessions that take place between Kaoru and Sentaro. The jazz in this show is one of the best parts of this series, but really, every element of this show contributes to how great it is.

Runners Up: AKB0048, Tari Tari

Best Slice of Life Anime
Little Busters!

I had long searched for an anime that contained a group of friends, with most episodes containing them hanging out and whatnot. I really wanted a slice of life like that, and I found it in Little Busters. Though the series had some really sad moments, it's still an excellent slice of life series.

Runners Up: Uchuu Kyoudai, Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou, Papa no Iukoto wo Kikinasai!

Best Comedy Anime
Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou

This show contains extreme exaggerations of very minor problems in the daily lives of high school boys, and that's what makes it funny! It's pretty much a skit show, containing the silly problems of teenagers made into extremely dramatic situations, and always give you a hilarious conclusion. The high school girls portion of every episode were also very funny.

Runners Up: Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!, Binbougami ga!

Best Sports Anime
Kuroko no Basket

I'm not really all that into sports. In fact, one can say, I have no interest at all in sports. This series, however, kept me interested the entire time, and explained basketball in a way that was both easy to understand and interesting. I was feeling the excitement during each match. I was on the edge of my seat each time a game was being played. Now, keep in mind I don't care for sports, so for me to like a sports series this much means it's pretty damn good.

Best Romance Anime
Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun

This series has a nice, conflicting romance that one can relate to. Both the main characters are pretty confused about love. When one character knows there in love for sure, the other is unsure. It's a little frustrating at points, but that's what makes it relatable. Love is frustrating.

Runners Up: Sakamichi no Apollon, Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo, Natsuyuki Rendezvous, Ano Natsu de Matteru, Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!, Inu X Boku SS

Best Action Anime
Magi

Though not every episode contains action, Magi's action is absolutely perfect in my opinion. Great movements, and blood (the blood was especially crazy during Morgiana's fight). Though, I have to say, the better action comes later in the story, and I hope it gets animated at least up to that point.

Runners Up: Btooom!, Accel World, Sword Art Online

Best Sci-Fi Anime
Psycho-Pass

It is a future where technology is used to determine whether someone is sane enough to live or not. No one is given any mercy by the authority, until our protagonist shows up. The whole political aspect of it is extremely interesting, and I like the frightening, yet realistic, portrayal of the future. The setting is enough to call it the best sci-fi anime of the year.

Runners Up: Shinsekai yori, Robotics;Notes

Best Mystery Anime
Zetsuen no Tempest

So, this guy's sister has been killed, and he goes on a journey with his buddy who happens to be the protagonist to help a lady who is trapped on an island who can help him find the killer. However, the only conclusion they have come to is that the killer is a member of the castaway's clan. Who is the killer? The shows not finished yet, so it remains unknown. It's a good mystery, and I hope I'll get a conclusive answer in the upcoming episodes.

Runners Up: Hyouka, Tasogare Otome x Amnesia, Another

Best Horror Anime
Sankarea

This succeeds as a horror because it scared me more than the other horror anime I watched in 2012. It wasn't scary for the zombie aspect of it, as much as it was for how damn creepy Rea's father was. That guy was just disgusting. But in reality, this show isn't that scary.

Runner Up: Tasogare Otome x Amnesia

Best Thriller Anime
Another

There really weren't any other thrillers in 2012. I'd have to say that the most thrilling part of this show was the "who's gonna die today?" guessing game. It was bloody, and there was so much death. You were constantly wondering who was gonna die next.

Cutest Anime
Inu X Boku SS

This show was nice, light-hearted, and refreshing. A cute blend of comedy, supernatural, and romance. The characters are lovable, and the main characters' back stories were touching. It was sweet, and always left me with a nice feeling after watching.

Runners Up: Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!, Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo, Yuru Yuri ♪♪

Best Shoujo-Ai Anime
Yuru Yuri ♪♪

There weren't any other shoujo-ai series in 2012 that I know of, but even so, Yuru Yuri still manages to keep you laughing, and the pairings are adorable. Also, I can't help but wonder if there's going to be another season, because they certainly left me wanting more.

Biggest Surprise
Kokoro Connect

I wasn't expecting much when I started watching this show, but, what I got was, probably the hidden diamond of the year. All of the characters seem like real people, and they all go through hardships as Heartseed toys with them for its own entertainment. There was also a bit of humor and great romance. Definitely did not have high expectations for it, but it ended up being one of the best shows of the year.

Runner Up: Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!

Best Plot Development
Hyouka

This show started off very slow, it became a bit boring at times, yet always kept my attention because of the stunning visuals. When the film arc began, I was interested, a legitimate mystery. Then, around the middle of the series, the festival arc began, and I fell in love. The story starts out slow, but really becomes amazing in the middle. Showing more interaction, character growth, and  even better mysteries. That is why I liked Hyouka so much.

Runners Up: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (2012), Koi to Senkyo to Chocolate

Best Sequel
Bakuman 3

Bakuman always manages to continue the flow of the story perfect, and it has in each and every season. As always, it has great humor, great romance, and wonderful characters.

Runners Up: Fate/Zero Part 2, Kimi to Boku 2, Nisemonogatari, Tantei Opera Milky Holmes 2

Best Ending
Inu X Boku SS

Most anime end in one of two fashions, just stopping at some point in the story, or, have an anime original ending. Inu X Boku SS, stops at some point in the story, and they couldn't have ended it in a better place. They ended at the beginning of a relationship, and I'm glad they ended it like that instead of going with an anime original ending. This ending left me with a nice feeling, even though I know what takes place in the story after that point. But that aside, it was a perfect ending.

Runner Up: K, Hyouka, Yuru Yuri ♪♪

Weirdest Anime
Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita

Bread had a bloody death, chickens fell to Ave Maria, fujoshi wars, being trapped in a manga, the construction of the "Fail Nation", and much, much more. This series was like drugs, no, this series was drugs.

Runners Up: Tsuritama, Tantei Opera Milky Holmes 2

Saddest Anime
Little Busters!

Nothing else I watched in 2012 made me tear up as much as this show did. Though there was only one really sad arc aired in 2012, it still made me cry, and though a few other shows made me tear up, maybe shed a tear or two, none of them managed to make me cry as much as Little Busters did.

Worst Story
Senki Zesshou Symphogear

Song gives them power, so they sing...while they're fighting giant blob monsters. And of course, the only ones who can wield the power of the Symphogear are dumb teenage girls wearing skin tight suits! Add in some fanservice, petty drama, derpy logic, and bad jokes, and you have Symphogear.

Runner Up: La Storia della Arcana Famiglia

Worst Plot Development
Kono Naka ni Hitori, Imouto ga Iru!

This was pretty much the entire series:
This girl is your sister, no wait, just kidding she's not. Oh, but maybe that other girl is your sister, and the way she refused that DNA test is uber suspicious! But wait! She can't be your sister. Maybe this girl is your sister, etc. etc. etc.

ENDING: TURNS OUT MY VERY FIRST GUESS WAS THE F****ING SISTER!!

It was very frustrating.

Runner Up: Campione!

Most Boring Anime
Moretsu Pirates

I don't know how they did it, but the creators of this series actually somehow managed to make a show about space pirates boring. I don't know how they did it, but they did. I was falling asleep during most of it, yet somehow I managed to stay awake. However, I will give them credit that the final two episodes were definitely much more interesting then the rest of the series.

Runner Up: Natsuiro Kiseki

Worst Characters
 Campione!

So, these girls basically start off with personalities, right? And then they all, oh so surprisingly, fall for the main character, and become hoes (except the shrine maiden chick, she was the same afterward). Most prominent females in this show fell for the main character, and became sluts.

Runner Up: Kono Naka ni Hitori, Imouto ga Iru!, Senki Zesshou Symphogear

Cheesiest Anime
Senki Zesshou Symphogear

Again, the world is being saved by stupid teenage girls wearing skin tight suits, who have to sing while they're fighting in order to accumulate the power for said suits. And of course, you have a bad guy (who of course has some sort of sad ass past) who turns good, the real enemy who turns out to have been with them all along?!?
All very much cliché, and it was done very badly, they tried to stretch minor problems too much (girl goes berserk because a monster attack prevented her from watching the stars with her girlfriend)...it was just painfully cheesy.

Runner Up: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (2012)

Most Disappointing
La Storia della Arcana Famiglia

What I was expecting was some sort of epic, battle royale where all these "family" members would massacre (or nearly so) each other for the sake of the title but...
In the end, the episodes between the first and the last were all pretty much filler, the actual Arcana Duello was a simple sword and gun fight where no one used their guns, and most of the fighting was cut out anyway. Also, the ending was a load of crap.

Runner Up: Campione!

Worst Animation
Zetman

The men's faces were very...sharp I guess is how you'd describe them. There were also times when the facial expression just looked downright hilarious. Also, all the women's faces look pretty much the same, and they all look like froggies. Ribbit.

Runner Up: Hayate no Gotoku! Can't Take My Eyes Off You, Senki Zesshou Symphogear

Worst Ending
Senki Zesshou Symphogear

What this ending has in common with two of the runners up is that it's pretty much the same ending, just done slightly differently. The way Symphogear did it, however, was pretty much the worst of all. Not to mention, the addition that pretty much nothing had changed, and the whole monster issue was never solved. But I guess they'll take care of that next season...?

Runners Up: Tasogare Otome x Amnesia, Beelzebub, La Storia della Arcana Famiglia

So, in conclusion, 2012 had a lot of great anime. Sure, there were some really bad ones in the mix, but still, in the end, 2012 produced so many anime I loved, and I have to admit, I'm a bit sad that it's over. But now, we get to look forward to all of the great series and the not-so-great series that will be produced this year.
